I say, go for the Hook but its up to you ... the deal seems good on the older model (two generations ago) Elite HDI.  Seems like the price should have been better considering the age of the HDI unit but if $$$ is tight, it will get you in the game for about 2/3 the cost of the newest 2016 model; Hook 5.

Haha. Well, now I am looking at the Humminbird SI. Out of my budget but I think it would be worth it. Its a lot more expensive to get a Lowrance with side imaging.

Have you considered a Raymarine Dragonfly?
The D5 Pro with Navionics+ has rebate of $100 till Sept.

I've personally owned the Lowrance Elite 5 HDI and Elite 5 w Chirp.
I've compared it side by side against the Dragonfly 7 and the Dragonfly was sharper, clearer and marking bait fish and fish better. FishingAddict can attest to these findings.

Check out Hodges Marine, where I bought mine.

Good luck.

Lowrance Elite 5Ti with 83/200 & 455/800 downscan $499 & $100 mailing rebate lands it about the same price as the Hook 5.  The Elite Ti is touchscreen!

Add another $100 & you can get it with TotalScan which gives you chirp FISHFINDER, downscan & side scan.

I still think the Elite Ti 5 with the 83/200/455/800 transducer is the best bang for $400 you'll find within the Lowrance line.  It all comes down to what you feel the most comfortable operating, what features you want/need, what you are wanting to spend.

One last one to really take a close look at is the Simrad GO5 XSE with 83/200/455/800 transducer for under $400.  Touch screen!  Fast!  Simrad is taking their big boat technology & making it compact for ski boats, small boats and yes ... Kayaks!  There is NO other unit with that feature list (yes, it has features far beyond those we would use on a kayak) for anywhere near the same $ spent.  Simrad wants to move it's brand into our realm of units in a big way this year & going forward.

Me too, I'm looking at the Humminbird SI but still hesitant. I don't see that many reviews on how it performs in salt and deep water.  Most reviews I see are positive but mostly from freshwater.

Yes.  That would give you chirp FISHFINDER, downscan & side scan all in one.
