I know people do. I never tried, and not sure if this one is the good for kayak (I heard Scotty Laketroller is popular)

Absolutely!!!

I caught a nice trout, mackinaw and two kokanee with a downrigger from my kayak this year.

That's odd - the picture in the link is of a Cannon Lake-Troll, but the ad calls it an Easi-Troll.  The Easi-Troll is bigger than the Lake-Troll.  I've been using a Lake-Troll on my Revolution for several years, and recommend it over the Easi-Troll because it's smaller, it's real easy to shorten its boom, and it handles an 8 pound weight very well.  For a description of how I mounted an Lake-Troll on my Revolution, and why I mounted it that way, see http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=12575.msg138905#msg138905 .

Sonoramike is correct: you can absolutely use a downrigger on a kayak.

I've mounted a Scotty Laketroller on my 13' Trident, and a Scotty Depthmaster and a Cannon Lake-Troll on my 13" Revolution.  The Cannon Lake-Troll is definitely my favorite downrigger, and it's way easier to mount on a kayak than the Scotty Depthmaster.  If you have a paddle kayak, you may need to stick with a very small downrigger like the Scotty Laketroller, so the downrigger doesn't interfere with your paddle stroke. And a Scotty Laketroller is easy to mount on a kayak, and is an inexpensive way to try out downrigger trolling.  But the Laketroller is a primitive downrigger without a brake or clutch - the cable reel is stopped by a hand nut.  And the Laketroller is only rated to handle a four pound weight, so you can't troll as deep before the weight gets blown back out of the cone of your sonar.  If you have a pedal kayak, get a bigger downrigger like the Cannon Lake-Troll.  They work way better than the small downriggers.

Thanks, I read your post before pulled the trigger, great you are here at NCKA as well ;)

I realize this should be too big for paddling (or any) single-haul kayak, I want to see if I can use it with AI. Do you think Cannon Lake-troll could work with Trident 15 / Ultra 4.7, or Scotty Laketroller is the best option?

I prefer to mount my downriggers next to my thigh, where they are easy to operate.  But when you're paddling a kayak, your paddle and your arms and elbows sweep over a large area of your kayak with each stroke.  You can't mount a downrigger next to your thigh on a paddle kayak unless the downrigger is real low profile.  While the Scotty Laketroller is a small and primitive downrigger, it's a good choice for mounting on a paddle kayak.  For a description of how I mounted a Laketroller on my 13' Trident, see http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=11486.msg128141#msg128141 . If you mount a Laketroller on the gunwale next to your thigh, you can lean your thigh against the cable reel, and can gradually lower the downrigger weight while paddling forward by reducing the pressure with your thigh.  A Laketroller doesn't need to be mounted sticking straight up - you could use a Scotty flush mount to mount a Laketroller on the side of a Trident next to the gunwale, sticking out at a 45 degree angle with the boom pointing straight forwards or backwards, which could keep it well out of the way of your paddle stroke.

I don't like mounting downriggers behind my kayak seat, because it's real inconvenient and awkward to operate a downrigger when it's in that location.  But the only place you may be able to mount a larger downrigger like the Cannon Lake-Troller on a paddle kayak is behind the seat.
