Hi all-
This board looks like a great positive supportive joint.
I'm an avid fisherman (shore, poke pole, party boat) and really looking to get into kayak fishing. I have some experiences kayaking, including a multi-day tour in the San Juans, but those experiences have been few and far between because I've never owned a kayak. I'm looking for gear and newbie advise and eventually will be interested in hookups once I feel like I'm ready to keep up.
My wife and four-year-old love getting on the water and they insist the first kayak I buy  be a tandem. Any recommendations on a craft that I can take the family on and also fish solo? I'm 6'4" 220 lbs- don't know if that means a bigger boat would be better for me anyhow? Any pointers welcome!

Cheers

Welcome to the board  :smt006 . I used to live In San Mateo as well. There are tons of information here. Just navigate through them and you should be good. Ask whatever you can't find.

P.S.

There's a big chance you'll ask about this in the future; the answer is WHEELEZ with big beach wheels and NOTHING else.

Welcome to NCKA. I'm in San Mateo as well, so hit me up when you want to head out to the ocean, or just for a paddle with the kids in Foster City. My son and daughter are on either side of your kid in age.

Welcome!  I'd recommend a Tarpon 130t, Perception Tribe 13.5, or Malibu XL 2 in that order.  They all paddle fairly well as solos, but I think an item to watch would be weight capacity. Enjoy!

I'd also look into a Hurricane Skimmer 140T. i tried it for the first time this weekend as a solo paddler.  nice light weight since its a thermoformed boat.  I had to paddle solo from the rear position - it handled fine but had some hull slap from that position since it was stern heavy.  if you're using as a true tandem i think the hull slap would be mitigated.

The length was great, there would be no problem with hitting paddles with a paddler in the front position.  Not the fastest boat but it had some glide.

I think CCK in San Carlos may carry them.

A Jackson big tuna is what I picked up for just that reason and the front rider can face the rear rider.

Welcome  :smt006

All 3 of you can fit on a OK Malibu 2XL.
Or you can paddle it solo.......not the fastest but very stable.

Welcome piscellaneous!  You're absolutely right about this being a good supportive joint. Just enough drama to keep things interesting ;-) there are lots of good fishing opportunities a short drive from your home. Check out a tournament efficient chill or hook up you won't be sorry you got involved.

Thanks for all your replies. Picked up a Malibu 2 XL angler and I've had it out on the water a few times, both solo and with the fam. Paddles just  fine solo in the middle seat position. I'm rounding out my essential Kayak fishing and safety gear this week and I'm ready for hookups. Especially interested in HMB. I'm a member of the yacht club so we could launch from there and I'll invite you in for a beer after.

Cheers!
