I just used my new Lowrance Elite-4 for the first time today. After about an hour and a half, it went off. So I unplugged the power plug on the back and then reconnected it. Then it powered back up. 30 or 40 minutes later, it went off again. Disconnected, reconnected, and it went back on, only to shut down again a little later.

What's the problem here? The battery is about six years old. Could that be it? Or is it a problem with the connector/something on the Elite-4?

Thanks,
Andrew

I think you can set it to show the battery voltage. Maybe that will show the condition of the battery. I think they can be set to shut down at a certain level to avoid having a dead battery to start your boat. Maybe you can lower the setting.

Sometime its a cold short, or sometimes it is the battery. I usually cross check using a constant and change the variables until i isolate to isolate the cause, but from my experience 50% it's connections and the other 50% the battery. The Lowrance FF are pretty durable given all the stuff we put it through.

I'd suspect the battery.  An old battery can have ample voltage but no amperage (aH) capacity.  Just replaced a 5+ year old car battery that had 12.3+ voltage but only 18 cranking amps (of the 675+ when new).  It test it on your car battery by holding the leads to test it.
