This is a good sign.  A few years ago when there was a big upwelling of cold water from the canyon the squid and krill flooded the bay, and the Salmon and WSB went off. Crossing my fingers for a repeat this year. :smt007

MONTEREY >> An unusually high number of humpback and blue whales are gorging on krill this week in the Monterey Bay.

The influx of whales and krill began Saturday, according to Nancy Black, a marine biologist and owner of Monterey Bay Whale Watch. A few miles offshore of Monterey, her crew discovered a mob of dozens of humpbacks, blowing air around the boat.

Thanks to high winds in June, an upwelling of cold water from deep below has drawn large amounts of the tiny shrimp, a favorite food of humpback and blue whales. This is the first significant krill bloom in the Monterey Bay in years, said Black.

Please keep us updated.

While in Bolinas on Saturday, I saw multiple whales that were not Greys or Humpbacks.  Likely Sei, Minke, or Fin whales based on the fin.  Maybe this is related?  Lots of bait bringing lots of whales?
Fish laugh when I paddle by.  Sometimes they laugh so hard they fall on my hook.

After seeing this article, I booked myself and the boy on a whale watching trip today on the Velocity out of Santa Cruz.  There are A LOT of whales out there.  Had a great showing of humpbacks including a couple curious ones that hovered boatside for a minute or 2.  A few minutes later we had an encounter with an 80+ foot blue whale, one of several spotted today.  On the way in, we did a few passes from the Cement Ship to New Brighton looking for great whites.  Had a very brief encounter with one juvenile that sounded as soon as the boats wake hit it.  Apparently they have been seeing enough great whites in the area that they are looking for them on the way in from most whale watching trips.
