After doing the surf class with my P-15 at HMB, I kinda took an interest in doing some surfing from a real surfing kayak. I spoke to Doug of HMB Kayak Co. (he was a former white water US team member) about this....

If there's any interest beside me, let me know. Doug will give a nice NCKA group rate for 6 students...

They have Cobra Surf yaks for the class.

I'll say its pretty fun. I've been paddling my cobra wave witch for a few years now & still totally dig it. Big waves, little waves, slop...its all fun.
I've considered an island wave ski, but there never seems to be enough $ in the budget.
Another plus-surf yaks generally weigh 30 lbs or less. Wish mine had room to fish off of.

Why not just go out with the Saturday morning surfing group at Pillar Point?

I'd rather learn from someone who teaches it for a living - besides, I don't have:

a helmet
a shorter paddle
a surf kayak
no clue of surf etiquette

Sean - we gotta hook up and yak surf sometime - I hear Grey Hound rock is a good place to yak surf. Great fishing there too! Should be easier haul a 30 # yak up that hill instead of a 60 pounder.

Minor issues. I've got a 220 cm paddle and a helmet you can borrow, you'd have to come up with a yak. The basics of surf etiquette can be found on teh intarweb. I'll be down here the weekend of the 24th and 25th.....

I've paddled a few rivers with my kayaks and have been thinking about getting a surf kayak for that.  Alameda creek is just down the street and transitions between calm and cowabunga depending on how long ago it rained.  The big offshore wash to the right out of bean hollow looks like it could be a private playground for kayak surfers.  It's a lot like mavericks - the bottom slopes up from 30' to 8' and then drops off again on the backside.

What's the rate he was talking?  I'd consider it if it's less than $100.

Josh - Doug gave us (NCKA) a price of 70 bucks for the day - all gear included.

I'm definitely in for it but I need at least 5 more bodies.

Promethean Spark - great minds think alike :)

Of course, I noticed that break while driving north from BH last October. Not a time that I'd like to be out there in a chum boat.

I like it because it'd be impossible to hit any rocks, and no board-surfer is going to paddle out to that thing.  We'd have it to ourselves, but rescues after a tumble would have a bit of urgency...  ;)  Really though, I doubt it's any worse than maverics or greyhound rock in that regard though.

Who says you need to come off/out of the boat before attracting unwanted attention?  Something only 9' long is a tasty snack.

Have a read: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/mchin.html

Now, that said, I'm in full agreement with you regarding the benefits of that break. May-September sounds perfect :)

Regards,
Scott

Mooch, just get yourself a great big super-tanker of a surfboard, like 10', one of those softtops.

or one of those 11' things with the single paddle. I bet you'd do just fine on it!
