montery surf fishing?

Got a class in Montery, Ca next week.  Any good beaches I can fish from down there that are not protected?  I would bring the suit and go spear fishing if someone can tell me where it is legal too.  I may be way off, but my buddies here at work who dive say everything is protected down there.  Thanks JR

Check the DFG site.  Most of the area is open for surf/shore fishing and spear diving.  The only area I can think of that is off-limits is the Hopkins Reserve by the Aquarium.

All this will change after the new MPLA.  Then it will not be worth it to shore fish here anymore . .sadly.  Enjoy it while you can.
