hypothetical question. 4 people head out on a zodiac in the pursuit of crabs/ abalone and Rod and Reel fishing for rockfish.
space being Limited at this point so many things will be shared. crab traps/guage/ landing net/ beer cooler and possibly an ocean rod for that matter.
now the sticky part of scenario. they all returned with their limits of targeted species.
would 1 Abalone iron and 1 Abalone gauge be in compliance with the law if all the divers took their limits at separate times. for that matter they all use the same suit ?

Answer from a guessing non-diver----tickets will be written for lack of irons for each (unless proved that they dove one at a time)

Why all the hypothetical questions? If you have the time to think about them, you have time to read the regulations for yourself.

You can take abalone by hand. But every diver must have an abalone gauge.

How about you share with us your interpretation of the regulations as it applies to your question?

I don't see a problem if they dove solo but each had while diving.  With that said those are not very.big items and if you each own them then probably just bring them along.  I usually have a 7,9,&10 inch gauge.  I have lost a gauge and have been with others who also lost one so have loaned gauges out while on the water also.

Four people sharing one suit? I would thing F&G would be suspicious that each person bought an ab card but only one person did all the diving.

Never seen anything saying you can't share a suit.  But yeah it would look sketchy doing so.  If that was truly happening I would just video tape each person doing their own diving so you can prove what happened.

A few shady folks make it difficult for others.

I thought abalone harvesting is very strict sport but yet i have yet to encounter warden on 2 trips up north. are they low on funds or do they know and see you tagging your catch and they don't bother to check? as for sharing gears, you can get a cheap gauge (better) and i've heard you can use your hand to get the abalone. wet suit, i do share with my buddy.

since we are here, i have a question. can I help search for abalone if I have my 3 and i'm still out on the water? and let my friend get it? or can you only search at 2?

I think Hojoman just answered my question. As long as i'm not detaching then i'm ok to help search?

As to my knowledge your not allowed to help or aide in any abalone harvesting.so if the warden sees you helping your friends even with just searching you'll more then likely get fined

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

the regulation is very vague as to what can and can't be done. i've seen youtube that people help search but others get. even from divers here i believe. it's the warden discretion as to how you help search. i'm hoping to run into one so I can ask politely.
