The family is taking a week in early August to visit the coast.

I like the Ft Bragg area, but my wife is saying that Sea Ranch VRBO openings are quite reasonable.

I want to dive as well as fish. And.... I'd like my young boys to come along with me. So sheltered launching and landing is a must. I know we can get in the water up by Bragg or not too far away. Fishing grounds close to the launch are needed as well. Again, not too hard up by Ft. Bragg

What about Sea Ranch though?

How about this whole kelp forest die-off thing too? Any place not as effected?

Should we go whole hog and try Shelter Cove?

If I go north it's always straight to Shelter Cove.  Great fishing but the water clarity is not fantastic for diving.

Sea Ranch rules. It has it all. Just don't tell anyone else.

When my kids were young we'd hit Ft Bragg area for a week every summer. More variety than the SeaRanch area.

South end of Mackerricher for beach combing, VanDamme or Russian Gulch for protected launches, Big or Albion rivers for a quiet and scenic family paddle (watch out for the wind on the return), pizza parlors, other good eats, movie theater, forested hiking areas, Mendocino for art and junk shops,

August 10-16 in Bragg it is.

Caspar here I come for sure. Hopefully the boys can hook into something there, if there's a nice weather window.

Going to be searching the archives for other hotspots. Sorely tempted to do the Elkslog, just for old times sake.
