Hello all, I normally fish top side from my yak in HMB but want to get into spearfishing.  I had made plans to be in Monterey this weekend and thankfully the wife is OK with me ditching her and baby for a couple hours Sunday morning.  I've never fished Monterey, but have swam out of Lover Point park once for a triathlon and was thinking to go there to launch and take a look-see just north of the point.

I won't be diving deep if at all, just wanting to get wet and see how the gear feels.  Wondering if anyone was going out tomorrow and I could hang back to see how it's done?  Any advice for a new spearo?

Planning to launch pretty early, like 6:30AM.  I will have my radio, CH69.  Doubtful if I can hear it while in the water though!  Thanks and hope to meet more of you guys soon.  You guys seem pretty badass.

-Bobby

Most diver go out of the cove just north of the point. It will save you a swim around from lover point beach.

Got it, thanks!  I will scout for some future spots to dive.  But this time,  I was going to paddle on my kayak from lovers point.  With all the new gear, I thought it would be helpful to have a kayak to get my self all situated before jumping in.

Just make sure that if you're shooting fish that you are south of Lovers point. To the north is An SMR. Good luck :smt006

Just make sure that if you're shooting fish that you are south of Lovers point or at least pretty far out. To the north is An SMR. Good luck :smt006

My bad, I mix up my Norths and souths  :smt044

It probably is technically more north than south by compass. But to be clearer. It's to the left. In the general direction that would take you south. Good call paul...

Thanks everyone for the advice, I went out this morning to christen my gear and it went ok.  I hung around just the other side of lovers point.  Didn't have enough weight so I couldn't really dive but it was still good to see how everything fit.   Visibility was about 20 feet.  The rock outcroppings I saw were covered in sea grass, so if there were any fish in there they were well hidden!  Saw some big perch on the way back to the beach.

Hoping to gain more experience soon, and get a buddy to come with me so I can feel a little safer.  See you all out there.
