My friend Jeff is lookging for some paddlers for a Lake Berryessa swim on SATURDAY, JUNE 4TH. Here is the info he sent me.

The Lake Berryessa Swim is open to everyone, and is one of the longest-running open water swims in America. It is also the biggest fundraiser for the Davis Aquatic Masters swim team, and attracts hundreds of swimmers of all ages to the 500 yd, 1-mile, and 2-mile swims. We are seeking 16 competent paddlers (kayak, paddleboard, canoe) to provide critical support with water safety at the event, which takes place at the Steele Canyon Campground, only a 1-hour drive from Davis.

Some benefits of volunteering:
•   $50 stipend
•   free event t-shirt
•   free refreshments on race day (bagels, water, fruit, etc.)

Requirements of water safety crew:
•   arrive equipped with a boat/board, paddle & life vest
•   ability to be out on the water for up to 3 continuous hours
•   first aid experience an asset, but not required

General expectations:
•   arrive at Steele Canyon Campground at 8am on Saturday June 4th for orientation
•   deploy your boat by 9am and paddle to your designated position on race course
•   remain on race course until the last swimmer passes your post (approx. 12pm)

There are 3 different jobs for water safety paddlers:

o   General Paddler
This is a mostly stationary job where you patrol a short stretch of the course (about 200 yds) to observe the swimmers and alert rescue personnel if a swimmer indicates that he or she is in trouble. You will have a tow buoy to assist these swimmers until evacuation can occur, if necessary.
o   Judge
We need one Judge at each turn buoy and at the start. Judging involves observing swimmers for rule violations and communicating these infractions to the referee via walkie talkie.
o   Sweeper
The Sweeper paddles the entire course with the last group of swimmers in each wave. If you want to keep moving, this might be the job for you.
If there is enough demand, we can arrange a shuttle to drive the water safety crew between Davis & Lake Berryessa.

If you have any additional questions or are able to fill one of these positions, please email Jeff Heiser, Water Safety Coordinator, [email protected].

Sounds look a good time!

I'll be out of town, though.  :smt002

It does sound like fun. Unfortunately, I'll be in Alaska.

Have fun!
