Fished the San Joaquin River near Manteca on Wednesday.  Black bass bite was good along the shore line near rock piles.  Shad were present and being munched on by good size bass and undersized stripers.  Did well with spinner baits in white and chartreuse colors.  Rattle traps in silver or shad imitation patterns were the ticket.  Didn’t get on the water till just after 2pm.  The fish were holding tight to the shore and ambush points.  Because of that we did better from the shore then we did on the yaks.  Big bass of the day was 5.4lbs.  Foul hooked big ugly on the tail which weighed 11.6 and fought like hell. I expect the next couple weeks will only improve.  Tight lines!

J/K, it's the only way I can catch bass.

Fixed your pictures.   :smt004

Haha... Actually they wouldn't touch the minnows that day.  Too many shad around.  Take it from me and save yourself from wasting $15 on jumbos.

Thanks for report, been to that area couple of times, but never fished. Planning to be again in couple of months - are there places that are better than others?

If you can find bait fish the bass and stripers will be there too.  There are several pumps along the river when they are moving water it seems to draw in bait fish.

I love the San Jaquin, grew up in Manstinka fishing off south Main St. Many great fish cought within minutes of town. Used to be able to drive on the levees and fish the whole area from shore. Than after moving to fresno, found the S.J. to be a world class fisheries. Many fish over 10lbs, plus countless over 5.
San Jaquin is truly a Jem of the central valley
