I was planning on the cobra but I found a standard horizon hx300 for 120 on Amazon. Does anyone have this model?

Just picked mine up today to replace the non-floater HX280 I had until last Nov., remember to download the $ 20.00 rebate from SH and mail it in.

Thanks for the rebate info I'll definitely do that, I just got mine yesterday after getting back from West marine or 120 so with the rebate it'll be 100 although 80 would be better.

+1, guess I could have shopped around a little more....😞

Yeah, me too. I'm sure I will probably find more stuff at better prices or better stuff for around what I paid but you live and you learn.

I don't think that you can find a better deal than the Standard Horizon HX-300 from GPS Store as posted above for the quality and price ($99). I think it's a good radio for the price. I ended up buying the HX-851 with GPS and few more extras from the GPS store last year, but if looking for a really inexpensive good VHF the HX-300 is a winner.

I keep saying I'll buy a SH HX150 when my old SH dies... but it's still going strong for 4 years now.  I also have a VHF150 WM that is going strong for 3 years now too.  I think I'll check out the HX300 as well, but i'm more in favor of compact and tethered, then larger and floating.  My first VHF was an ICOM M34, which was a floating model, sank after dropping it overboard foolishly with a tiny, plastic carabiner that was enough to sink it.

I don't know much about vhf's but the hx300 seems pretty compact compared to most of the other models although icom does have some pretty compact radios. Only thing I think could have been made better is the tether locks to the clip and not the radio itself so if the clip somehow unclips.......good thing it floats, or does it.

Sadly while preparing for the O'Neil Forebay F&C I dropped my old Uniden VHF and it landed right on the On/Off volume /Squelch knobs and now it has no squelch.  I may try and open the radio and see if I can repair/reattach what may have broke.  Radio still operates, just can't silence it :smt012

I was also looking at a couple uniden models which one do you have and how does that work for you, before it was dropped.lol
Sorry I don't remember the model at the moment, (Radio's at home) I bought the thing back in 2004 when I got my first Hobie OB.  The battery has lasted this long! It still has a full charge, and accepts a full charge after what 12 years? Its a water proof model which has never been tested, (Never dropped in water) always tethered to my PFD. I'm surprised that the battery has remained good this long!  It has a button for CH16 and Weather, other than that, no other bells & whistles 5W /1W switchable.
For as much as I use the thing, having no squelch is not terrible, (Once a year!) I'll keep the thing and yea I'll still try to see if I can reattach the squelch knob.

Used to use a Uniden, till it was dropped at GS-7 near the whistle buoy and sank like a rock in the middle of a conversation.
Upgraded to a SH that floats and have them attached with a T-Reign retractor to my best.
Love my SH radios, only problem I ever had with them was when I accidentally hit the screen on my HX290 and it cracked. Still works fine, so I keep it as a back up.

after looking at the sh hx300, wish I have gone with that one instead icom m36 since it can be charged via usb which is nice!! out on the water you can plug it into an external power source and recharge it.

If anyone is interested, I have s spare standard horizon HX300, missing an antenna.  I'll make a classified post when I pull it out of storage to take photos.  Pm if interested before it gets its own thread.
