Hello,

I will be coming from Las Vegas, NV to Northern California and fishing Lake Sonoma.  I know California has some strict inspection policies/procedures regarding mussels, especially for out of state water craft.  Since I fish Lake Mead, which is notorious for its mussel infestation,  I am sure I will get flagged.  Granted, kayaks are easy to dry out and clean, but I want to make sure I don't have any down time and I get on the water as soon as possible.  What is the procedure for lakes up north, or specifically Lake Sonoma?  What should I expect and do I need to get the tag every time I get off the water?

Thanks in advance.

Short answer as far as I know and having fished there .... "they" don't inspect at the public boat launch ..don't know about the private one ..

Some places in california inspect, some don't.  Some oare more hapazard than others.  east bay mud inspects everything.  I understand that san luis rey inspects everything.  up this way ruth lake inspects.  CLear lake only inspects motor and trailered boats.  cartop kayaks dont get inspected.

It just depends upon where you go.  nfi about lake sonoma from personal experience, but if vk says they don't inspect, they dont inspect.

If you go into oregon on your trip they will inspect you at the border.  They will also clean your boat for free :)

so just be a decent human being and keep yur boat clean and dry after going to mussel infested waters and you'll be good.  as far as inspections, CA is all over the map.

Lake Sonoma  has random inspections and has a Target date of May 1st for mandatory inspections. They will probably start limiting launch times and live bait restrictions.  If you are coming from Mead please make sure that your boat has been cleaned properly and is dry.
