I am a cheap. Always looking to save a buck. Anyone have any tips on lube for reels. I have lots of options on hand, just not anything specifically for saltwater fishing reels. Anyone have any experience with any of the following as a reel lube.
Gun oil, di-electric grease, white lithium grease, red automotive grease, axle grease, anti seize. Of course I realize that buying the proper grease and oil is an option. But I am curious.  Let me know.

Not sure if it's true of "reel lube" but after forty years in the petroleum business,,,,,,,,,,,

Marine oils/greases have an additive that adheres to metals in such a way as to exclude/prevent water from getting to the metal surface.  This all happens on a molecular scale, and after testing marine and non marine oils in the lab where I used to work I can tell you that the additive in marine oils really does work.

Early in my career I got to work with some of the research chemists that developed such oils back in the 50s.  I learned allot from them.

That is funny.  "Always an option."  Sum'n sump'n prolly work just fine in the short run.  But, why not keep the reel forever by treating it right?  Just sayin.....

I would think anything can also affect the fish's reaction to your lure if the flavor of your lube isn't to their liking.  So, what would a fish tolerate as a lube if it got transferred to the line and the lure?

Mostly what I am searching for is alternatives. Like, bulb grease is the same thing as dielectric grease but one is cheaper. We always used white lithium on our freshwater gear.
Is there a good brand that you know and trust?

For everything and anything regarding reel maintenance I defer to the "guru" of fishing reels, Alan Tani.

His site is a great resource, the link is in reference to reel lubricants in particular.
