I was forwarded this email and thought I pass it on to you.

Sorry Bill for not having the images greater than 1.5M.
I'll work on that in the future.

An Amazing sight in the South Pacific !

August 2006, the yacht 'Maiken' is traveling in the south Pacific when they

came across a weird sight...

It was sand in the water, and floating ON TOP of the waves...

But continue on......................

.
This is not a beach, it is volcanic stones floating on the water.
.

.
.
.
The trail left by the yacht...
.

.
And then this was spotted... ash and steam rising from the ocean...
.

.
And, while they were watching...
.

.
A brand new island formed...
.

.
A plume of black ash...
.

.
Pretty wild, huh?
Do you think that spot will be fishy in the future?

Hey Chef how things going?  Are we going to fish together again like last year?

jmairey, I have used my T160i twice this year.  The weather and ocean conditions haven't been that great, otherwise
I would have been out more.  Yesterday was nasty.  White caps, 15knot winds and mixed swell (slop).  We knew this
before we entered the water. :thumbdown
The T160i  handled great.  Waves were constantly crashing over the bow.  Yet inside my yak stayed mostly dry, no
gallon of water slushing around.

A rainbow appeared, faintly in the pic.
Slow day.  Dry landing.  Conditions like those make the T160i one of the best yaks to be on.

I am still skeptical. Where is the floating sand in the pics of the islands being formed? I would also think that an event which would cause something as incredible as that would make one helluva big wave. If it is the real deal then it is an awesome spectical.

It's not really sand; it's volcanic ash which is very light. If it wasn't an explosive eruption, it wouldn't create a big wave. These things happen all the time, although those guys were almost close enough to get broiled. My bet is that the island will disappear and get re-created over and over again, like others of this type.

The island in question is called "Home Reef" and is located in the South Pacific in the country of Tonga.

Here's a map for you...

Evidently this island has formed several times in the recent past (1852, 1857, and 1984) and then erroded away shortly afterwards each time.
