I recently put a DIY anchor trolly on my WS thresher 140, using hardware store pulleys at the bow and stern, a length of BRAIDED rope, and a stainless steel ring in the middle to clip my anchor/chute to. The trolleys operation is flawless, until I attach something to it. After sitting in the current of the slough or the ocean for any amount of time my anchor/chute line always winds up wrapped around the trolley line, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Sometimes it's not so bad, but last weekend I got so frustrated trying to untangle my chute I just cut the rope away. It really just doesn't make sense to me at all.

Could the ring be catching so much current that it's able to spin despite the pull of an anchor or chute on the end?

Thanks for any insight!

Does it happen when either an anchor or chute is deployed? I could imagine the chute spinning in the current and twisting the line until it wrapped up your trolley line with it.

Shorten your trolly line as much as you can. Use a zigzag cleat to secure the line to the boat when anchor/drift chute is deployed and keep your angle to the current where you want it. So, as tight as you can and still be able to zigzag into the cleat. I've never had any issues with either my homemade rig (just like yours), or my store bought version ( new boat ). Also, is your line tied directly to the ring on both ends? If so, add a carabiner to one side and clip it to the ring. You can unclip it and use it as a dock or tow line if you want. Plus, you can remove any twisting there might be in your rope. Check your anchor line too. If it's twisted, it might transfer the twists to the trolly line when it tightens under load. Hope this helps!

Sounds like your chute needs a swivel

are you clipping your anchor/chute to the trolley itself or to the kayak?

I usually run the line of the anchor/chute through a hole in the trolley ring and cleat it directly to the kayak using a jam cleat.  i would imagine that would prevent any trolley line twist. Also easier to release if you ever need to for any reason, just pull up on the cleat and let the line flow out.

Solid ideas here! I'm going to have to give some or all of them a try. I think I'll replace the ring with a turnbuckle so that I can make sure the line is tight, use a clip on one side instead of tying the rope directly to it. I'll pick up a zig zag cleat and run the line through the clip instead of attaching to it. Since the lines on my chute are already cut I'll put a swivel in there.

I think that should cover it! If it still twists I'm going anchor-less  :smt044

Thanks everyone
