Russian 1/21

Drifted from my place to Mem Beach All I got was 1 quick pulldown no hook up. Had to meet a guy in Windsor to buy a MTB. Then I headed to  Steelhead Beach and paddled up stream as I was paddling I past over a pod of about 10 fish in some frog water. Cool I paddled up to the next riffle to wait for them, I anchored turned around to fish and saw a big splash and here is a harbor seal eating a nice hen. I guess the seal chased the fish down stream, about 30 mins later the seal got another . Bummer Water is as clear as the air we need rain. I guess I will start fishing tide water.

A day paddling with seals on the hunt ,on the river, sounds perfect, even without a hook-up.
And there is no doubt on the need for RAIN!.

What does SEAL taste like?  And do they eat wiggle warts?

With the river so low, it becomes so easy for seals/sea lions to target steelhead, really can't blame 'em.  If the river gets any lower everyone can start sight fishing.

I wouldn't mind too much if they ate the whole fish but these just ate the guts.

Most animals (e.g. bears) do the same thing if the are plentiful...its the most nutritious part and high in fat.

River otters do the same, we found out during a recent spawning survey.  I'm sure something else ends benefitting from the rest of the carcass.

Juvenile fish

This is one of a pair of otters that accompanied me along my drift down the Eel this weekend. They would show up at a few holes ahead me munching on baby steelies. They were having much better luck than I.
