3 months into kayak fishing & have been using mainly metal jigs. Recently, I started using the Ahi Assault Jigs as recommended by my buddy Kenny Kundargi; he typically gets his limit on Lings with them. I've caught ~8 lings since i've started (3 keepers), but it is really hit or miss. I don't have a fish finder and so i just kinda wing it, or look for someone who has one & kinda creep near them. Any suggestions for a rookie like myself? What's everyone catching fish with lately? Also, anyone know of an iPhone app that would show my position relative to MPAs?
Thanks.

Since you don't have a fishfinder its going to be a hit or miss unless you know the area. As crash recommended, The Navionics app may give you the general vicinity of the structures if you use the paid version.
If you want to get a better hit rate go with someone who knows the area.
Even a cheap FF can help you get over the structures. Keep moving until you find a spot that's productive.
Try using Big Hammer (or Branson) swim baits, too.

Those jigs are all you need.  I like to use the 8oz jigs.  Easier to get to the bottom without getting picked up by smaller rockfish.  If it gets hung up on the bottom , allow it to drop and usually the weight of the jig will pull the hook free. Make sure you are coming in contact with the bottom a lot.  I like to let it bang on the rocks, seems to wake up the lings.  I've had 20 ling days with them.

That is an excellent jig, they rocket to the bottom. I usually replace the hooks with assist hooks, my own.

But just using the jig all day would be frustrating for me. Try to mix it up with some plastics. I tend to look at what comes out of the lings mouth. If it's a fish coming up I'll use a swim bait or iron. If it's a squid or octo I'll use a slug because the long extended profile looks like a squid/ octo swimming.

As for fishing without a ff, fish kelp points and island. Kelp usually indicates structure and the island usually indicates raised structure in deeper water.

Lingcod fishing is all about structure.  A FF / GPS combo is must have so you can be regularly successful.  Rocky bottom that look likes a EKG reading produces but can also snag your rig.  Nice thing about kayak fishing you can work your way around the snag and get free.
Once you've found a productive spot, save a waypoint so you can keep coming back to the same spot.
A metal jig and swimbait rig gets a Lingcod's attention.  Adding a teaser shrimpfly with a strip of squid a foot above the jig can produce a double hook up.

I fish for them twice a month and around the company of excellent fishermen who have a wealth of knowledge .  :smt001

I think where you first went wrong was listening to anything that Kenny says  :smt003

I tend to prefer irons over swimbaits, and I don't notice any appreciable difference between brands. Where I do notice a difference is when I switch out the trebles for  singles, which tends to snag less for me.

If there's like zero drift or the wind  is dead iron. If you have a 1-5 mph wind or current drift the swimbaitbwill out fish any jig. You need drift for the bait to work properly.

We fished for years with no fish finder. Look to the land for clues and use your jig head or to feel the bottom.. If you see a point that sticks out into the water envision that same spine running out.  When the drift is around four knots banging the bottom with a four oz. jig and a swimbait you are gonna get a lot of strikes. When the bite is on hard cast the swimbait away from the kayak letting it swim to the bottom then walk it towards you. Braided line is paramount in either application.
