Hey fish folk,

I'll be camping at Russian Gulch State Park on August 21-23.  I'll be bringing my Trident Ultra with me and hopefully land some quality rockfish and a ling or two or three.  Anyone have any tips on fishing that area?  I plan to toss some 5-9" big hammers on a 4oz jig head and see if I can't entice someone to bite.  But if anyone has some better ideas, I'm all ears.  I'll let you know how it goes, hopefully with some pictures as well when it's all said and done.

You have the right plan!  6.5" Big Hammers and 9" Sledge Hammers on a 4oz jighead  have been my goto for limits every time this year.  Some Pro Cure Bloody Tuna gel on the hammers always helps.

Awesome, I'll give that bloody tuna a try, it works great on my gitzits and kwikfish for salmon, so why not some big lings?

Anyone else going to be out there on the 22nd or 23rd?  Would love to have a diving buddy or fishing buddy if you're already out there.  Never dove from my kayak so we'll see how it goes.  Hopefully the weather is kind and visibility is nice.

The diving was great, got my abs quickly, but the water was pretty rough on Saturday coming back out of the cove we went into.  Had a beginner with me, so I spent a lot of time showing her the ropes but no to avail.  She came back with a bunch of sea urchins that we ended up taking to a sushi restaurant in Sac on Sunday.

The fishing was good, but didn't have enough time to spend out there, but I hooked into two cabezon, one around 16" and the other too small to keep.

All in all it was a good trip, except that the kayak did get flipped on the way out, and I lost my brand new pair of sherwood elite fins :(

Thanks for the tips!  Looking forward to my next dive off my kayak

Great job dude!!

Bummer about the fins!!

Good lesson learned though to stow or secure all gear for launch/landing!!

Sorry about your fins. I am paranoid with loosing stuff and bungee or secure everything.  Even my water bottle.

My son and I found your black and yellow fin floating and picked it up.  We left it on the ledge by the shower.    Maybe the rangers picked it up.

Ha really? Did you only see 1 fin or both?  Next time I'll definitely be strapping everything down, or stowing it in the hatch, and writing my name/number with a big sharpie on the stuff I can.

haha get the hell out. Yeah it was a black and yellow sherwood floating north just outside the cove. We took it up to the entry station where the rangers take your money.
