The only advice I didn't see was to think about the line wt, you never really know what's gonna hit it, chances are slim that it would be a a big fish but didn't someone on NCKA catch a hali or WSB on their sabiki a few years ago?

I have heard of halis, I caught blues, blacks, and lings too after loading up on anchovies. Cant keep them, too many hooks. But yeah, big fish can happen.

if your going to be on a PB i would use heavier line for jigging bait. 4lb test will work but will require more time to get the bait in and more chance of tangling your rig. But to each its own Have fun!

Thanks for the advice everyone! I didn't get to try my sabiki's today, but will Sunday for sure. As I said I got several of them, so I'll get to give everyones tips a try, and I added all the tips to my fishing notes to refer to when I'm at different locations. All the ones I have are a smaller size, I'm not sure now what my logic was buying a bunch that were the same size. Maybe then I'll tie up my own sabiki's (can't be rocket surgery right) and throw them on my lake set up to jig some heavier weights and hooks. I have pool noodles to wrap them in, so I'm hoping I get at least a couple uses out of them, but as long as I get some bait I guess I don't mind one time use!

Thanks again for all of the tips! I'm feeling better about my chances of catching some live bait and not looking like a fool  :smt003

Depending on what you want to catch for bait, and what bait is in the water, use bigger or smaller sabikis. For Macks and Jack smelt, I use #6. Smaller for the smaller fish. I never tip mine and do just fine. I troll mine in route to the fishing spot. Put a 1 oz kastmaster on the bottom, cast out, and start paddling. Fun as heck. Often I cut mine in half and just use three hooks, it get knotted up fast with a few 20" jack smelt or a bunch of mackerel on it. Everybody has their way of doing it, they all work, it just boils down to what you like to do.

+1

I'd just add that using a heavier weight (like 4 oz) seems to help me avoid tangles.

A couple weeks ago, I caught a keeper-sized lingcod on a sabiki. I'm sure it would be blast catching something really big on one.

I unintentionally bought a Sabiki rig that had red hooks awhile back. It out fished all others the other day for anchovies in Humboldt Bay. You never know I guess.
