Is it a good idea, anybody's doing it? Of course, when swell is low ;)

I went to Pacifica yesterday, and swell was very low, but wind was terrible, especially in the morning before 11ish. Had to paddle all the time, 6oz jigs were not enough for that kind of drift (I guess pedal would help here ;) )

I guess risks of rapid wx change and one-off wave are always there... What about floating anchor?

Yes if wind is moving you faster than the tidal current a drift sock can help. Or you can try 8-10oz lead. I like to go to diamond jigs for the fastest drop to depth when the wind is blowin. Even 7oz can make the difference.

A full anchor would sketch me out, but definitely something to slows you down, hobies pretty much laugh at the wind, tyeing off to the kelp is cool.

Im also curious about this. What if: anchor line is not perminantly tied to the kayak but clamped down with your foot or leg against the boat? and if a sudden swell came in, the line would tug enough to release. Somewhat of a drag effect of your reel. It doesn't take much to keep from drifting.  Im picturing this as some have stated that instead of tieing to kelp, they would sandwich the kelp between the foot and the kayak peg.

Has anyone done this with an anchor line?

I can see why people would be against this as all the slack line can be a huge tangle disaster, but if there was a line keeper/reel this might just work?

Anchoring is possible. It's better with some type of bungee attached

Something like that? He has a reel, and said the rule of thumb is 3x depth.

Leg lock some kelp.
I used to use a kelp clip with a bungee. It came loose and damn near knocked me out and I should have lost an eye.
Now when the wind blows that hard I fly a kite.
