Cant afford a trevala right now, so ugly stik tiger will have to do.  Im looking at a few, but before i get into any questions, i would like to mention that i will be mostly doing rf, lings, occasional halibut if lucky, but mostly targeting lings. Mostly jigging with swimbait, shrimpfly, grubs, with weights up to 6oz. Not really a fan of live bait. Also will do some bay fishing for striper and halibuts.

Will be pairing with penn jigmaster. Will it fit?

Question: i have my heart set on the tiger lite jigging 6'3" (biggest one) Will this be an appropriate rod for the reel ill be using and the application? Anyone have this particular rod? Its the one with the "trigger".  Is 6'3 long enough? If you recommend a "regular" tiger rod, why?  If not for the increased length. And what's the difference between the regular and lite version on the tigers?

Should i just neglect the jigging label mentality when looking for a kayak rod?

Lastly ive seem a few other jigging style rods as well, aside from trevala, theres penn rampage, and another one from okuma. Anyone have them and like them?

I use the Ugly Stik Tiger Lite 7' Heavy, BWCL2200.

I have an Abu Garcia Ambassador 5500 on it, great for my rock fishing setup. Also try the Shimano Clarus for RF fishing its lighter but a little more expensive than the Ugly Stik.

IMO that Penn Rampage is a nice rod for $79 clams. I like the 6'6" medium. 30 - 80# line, 2 - 5 oz. Fast action. Looks good too. Buy it from somewhere with an extended warranty and beat the snot out of it. MODEL # RAMJG3080C66

I would of got it if I didn't score a killer deal on my Travala Med.

I suggest a rod with a minimum  length of 7 ft. This allows you to maneuver your line around the bow when needed.  Unless you have long arms 6.3 ft length would require you to crawl or lean hard forward.

Check out the Shimano Clarus rods designed for Worm and Jig like this one:

I was looking at the clarus, FA, saw your ad, i did consider it, but it may not be able to handle 6oz or maybe even more.  I want something a bit more beefy. The clarus might be my 2nd rod in the future, and besides the jigmaster might be too big or won't fit with the clarus.

But then again, once we talk about 2nd rod down the line, ill have the nicer trevala. What an expensive hobby.

Thanks for the input guys.  Now thinking about the length, my yak is a 12fter, but if i think about the long run, i will upgrade to a 14ftplus, so yea, 6'3 might be too short to maneuver.  Should i consider a longer tiger rod (non lite, or non jigging)? Like the BWCL2200 mentioned? How does it handle for jigging and my fishing style?

What an expensive hobby.

Try doing this 1-2 times a week and drag racing 2-3 times a month. And now I'm back to playing golf again too.

I used the regular Tiger in medium-lite or medium for a few years. I still use the medium for Ocean Salmon, and Halibut.

I use the 6 3 it works fine for me as rod length.the difference between the lite and regular is the blank on the lite is smaller so it's lighter hence the "tiger lite".I've used bass rods but once you go past 4oz you can really feel the strain on the rod on the upwards jigging motion.get the medium light or medium in the tiger lite the heavy is really stiff.as far as your reel to fit comfortable on the rod it might be a little heavy for the rod(tiger lite)but do like vk says the best way is to bring the reel with you and put it on a rod
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Yes, listen to the master, FishingAddict, the 7ft is just right if you ever need to move rod around your bow the 6'3" will be a reach. I'm 5'10 and the 7ft is just right for me.

The BWCL2200 (heavy) has a lot of backbone and I've caught sharks, salmon, lingcod, rays. It has a fast tip for the jigging and I've even mooches out of this rig. I usually start with this rod and go to the Clarus for casting out or when my arm gets tired. Others may say this is too stiff but it's a personal preference. I usually troll with 8-10oz weights.

P-Sherman, myself and other buddies go jigging at least twice a month.  :smt004  My favorite stick is a Shimano Teramar WC.  I just got a Phenix Inshore waiting to get wet.  Both are over 7 ft, provide great casting distance and very powerful.  They are lighter than most rods and won't wear you out if you are casting / jigging all day.

I just got my second trevala. Outdoorproshop shipped free over 100 spent. plus signup for discount code.

IMO research and get what you really want the first time.  Because you will end up getting extra down the road if you don't.
FYI.  the medium trevala weighs 4.5oz.  If you mate it on the jig master it kind of defeats the purpose of a light rod.
I mate it with a lexa reel, ant the setup weights about 1.5lbs.   Thats less then the jigmaster reel itself.   Just something to consider..

This hobby is still cheaper than my other hobby.. Moto trackdays..  Just cant even afford to do those as much any more.

The good about fishing compared to that is I have gear that will last me a while and I can reuse..

Before kayak fishing My setups are under 75 bucks..  I cant even imagine spending more than that. Now its 3 times that..  On the plus side I dont spend money on fish from the store anymore.. :smt003

Ended up picking up the 7' BWCL2200 hvy. It felt real nice, but ill have to bring it home to try it out with the reel on.

Went to fishery supply in san jose my Local tackle shop. Got it for $55 They have a lot of tigers, and they have the travala that tempted me real bad. $120

Looks like their stuff is a bit cheaper than even online prices. Just in case anyone is interested.

Which local tackle shop is that?

Here's my UglyStik Lite (H) in action. I think this was a double hookup Verm and another RF.

"Fishery Supply" on story rd.

I have been going there since i was a kid. Its owned by Vietnamese people and family operated. Workers are not much help for advice, but if you know exactly what you want, this is the place. Unfortunately, they don't have much selection for swimbaits and jigheads.

Ah, I thought there was a new shop in SJ I didn't know about. LOL! They usually have best prices for weights (locally) and a source for live bait. Seems their Ugly Stik prices are pretty good too.
