howzit everyone,

Second fish id request. I'm new to the area so still learning.

I hooked something in 65 feet today on a lure. It was small only 2 feet long. It had the body of small shark but its mouth was shaped like that of a sturgeon or skate. I never like get fined so I let it go.

No pic. Didn't have my phone on me.

Was it a dogfish?

Thanks
HG

Or a smooth hound,  The Spiny dogfish has those green eyes as shown in the pick, and it has a spine  just in front of the dorsal fin, maybe others (I don't remember for sure).

A smooth hound looks very similar except no spines or green eyes and tend to be smaller and more common, a 2 footer would be above average size from what I've seen.

yep! that was it. legal to catch?

Spiny dogfish?
"The recreational fisheries for soupfin shark (Galeorhinus zyopterus) and spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) are open year-round to divers2 and shore-based anglers. These fisheries are open to boat-based anglers from April 15, 2015 through December 31, 2015 (see important NOTE at the end of this section). These species may only be taken or possessed3 in waters less than 180 feet (30 fathoms) deep. The bag and possession limit for soupfin shark is one fish with no minimum size limit. The daily bag and possession limit for spiny dogfish is 10 fish within the 20-fish general bag limit, and there is no minimum size limit."

Its a little fattier than most sharks so it stays moist when cooked. If definitely a good "battered and fried" fish. In fact, if you see Rock Salmon" in a British fish n' chips place, its actually dogfish.
