Headed to Tomales tomorrow and I usually fish around hog island. I was looking at Lawson's landing fishing report and looks like theres been some action at "the bar," but I'm not sure where the bar is. If anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated  :smt003

I think when they say "the bar" they are referring to the sand bar at the mouth of the bay. . . I think. Never actually fished close to there with the dangerous conditions that can be present.

Yes, the "bar" is the large sandbar at the mouth of the bay directly west of Lawson's Landing. Its can be a really, really dangerous spot and difficult to navigate safely, much less fish effectively in a kayak. Its easy to spot on the water - it'll appear as though waves are breaking well offshore for no apparent reason. Sneaker waves are really common there and conditions can change in minutes.

Maybe others can chime in, but there are plenty of butts deeper into the bay(around Hog Island particularly) so its just not worth putting yourself in that kind of danger at the sandbar.

I was fishing the bar as a kid in a 14' aluminum Gregor.

Thought we were gonna die - we didn't and my buddies dad who grew up nearby made sure we didn't but that memory sticks out.

I wouldn't take my kayak near the bar.

You can fish the bar Annie. You just have to be careful. Timing. Like no big swell. Low wind and an incoming tide right at high are in your favor. People who get killed at the bar or capsize is because they are uniformed of the possibilities there. Divers drift it all the time. Go to the divers board or send Batt a PM to find out more. Batt spears at the bar and does very well from what Ive seen.

Just paddle out of the mouth till a swell jumps up in front of you and spits you back in.  Then paddle around it.
