And you do HOOK testing too!?!?  Thanks for that INFO.I have used both, but now I have a reason to buy more OWNERS!! p.s. They make a sweet "Catch & Release" type hook that works every time(the tip is curved-in?)

Joel -

I agree on the owner vs gamakatsu issue. I think the quality of the finish on the gamakatsu hooks has gone down over the last few years. Were you using ghost shrimp or grass shrimp? Looks like 80# mono for your leader?

Thanks! Scott

Good eye Scott! I did use 80# big game for leader. And I had 30# Power Pro braided for main line.

I was using grass shrimp - 3 shrimp per hook. Ghost Shrimp were out of stock that day.

I like gammys because I can sharpen them if need be.

Those cutting point hooks suck to sharpen.

I don't like how broad they are, although I use them on occassion.  I'm a gammy guy.

Way to getter done guys.  The first one is a big accomplishment.  Had you ever landed one from shore Joel?  I've still to land or even hook one on my yak yet.  I was out there around 10 and was gonna paddle out to meet you guys.  I arrived and prepared for launch then realized I had forgotten my suit and lifejacket.  I had my booties and splash guard so I went for it.... Yikes, it was cold in my bendavie pants and thin sweater under the guard.  I anchored up for a little while straight out from the rat rock and hooked into a small smoothie then a 3 to 4' seven gill which splashed me good.   I was freezin after that and bailed.  Congrats again to both of you guys.  JTF..

- can't beat the Shimano trevala rod = very light and and perfect for other uses: great for rockfish, Halibut, Sharks and Batrays :smt045

Gonna have to try mine out there next time.  It'd be way lighter than the rod I usually use.

JTF- Thanks! - I never landed one from shore, But I'll be bringing out my surf rod and will be fishing Coyote Point after work with Scott Thornley soon! I totally agree with about "catching the first one is a big accomplishment".....but being consistent is skill and persistence at it's best. And Erik K. always comes to mind  :smt002

So, after 4 years of chasing dinos...here's my take on "Kayak Fishing for Sturgeon"

Pimped out kayak: $1000.00
gas and toll money to cross the Golden Gate: $20.00
half  a pound of grass shrimp: $9.00
cold & rain weather outfit: $200.00
rod, reel and tackle: $400.00

After 4 seasons of dealing with the unfavorable conditions that the Bay has to offer - while sitting painfully still, mouth completely shut, and eye's glued to the tip of the rod - on a vessel that was not meant to be "anchored" - that's about 38 inches wide - a couple miles off shore and within shot gun range form trigger happy duck hunters - AND finally landing a legal sturgeon...while screaming like a 5 year old girl who just skinned her knee on the play ground...
PRICELESS!!!

....will I do it again? NEVER  :smt011
