Floyd Mayweather won the title from Manny Pacquiao in May when they met in their record-breaking boxing match. While the fight did not live up to expectations, the two received record pay days.

After his victory, Mayweather was supposed to vacate his other two world titles as well as pay a $200,000 sanctioning fee.

When Mayweather stated he would vacate all of his titles to give younger fighters a chance, the WBO announced the Bradley/Vargas fight that took place on June 27th would be for the vacant title. Mayweather was irate at the news and questioned how he could be stripped of a championship he never even received.

Mayweather was given an extension to vacate his titles and pay the sanctioning fee, but failed to contact the WBO committee by the 4:30 deadline on Friday. As a result of this, WBO announced on Monday that they has vacated the WBO Welterweight Championship.

“The WBO world championship committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the WBO welterweight champion of the world and vacate his title for failing to comply with our WBO regulations of world championship contests,” WBO said in a statement.

“… Despite affording Mr. Mayweather Jr. the courtesy of an extension to advise us of his position within the WBO Welterweight Division and to vacate the two 154-pound world titles he holds, the WBO World Championship Committee received no response from him or his legal representatives on this matter… The WBO World Championship Committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as the WBO Welterweight Champion of the World and vacate his title, for failing to comply with our WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests.”
