I just put on a hobie sailing rudder and noticed that when the control handle is in the middle the rudder is not straight, the rudder is facing about 20 or 30 deg to the right. I was messing with the screws on the line but it looks like thats only for tension. does anybody know if I need to adjust this? thanks in advance

You can adjust the two lines back at the rudder to get your handle/rudder lining up the same. With the three Hobies I've had the rudder lines all seem to stretch a little when new & then settle in after adjusting once or twice. Make sure you have your kayak up on sawhorses with the rudder deployed in the down position before making any adjustments.

the handle isn't supposed to be perfectly straight with the rudder. if you play with it you'll notice that the handle turns farther to the right then the left where it hits the side of the boat. hard to explain but if you find the center of the rudder handle "throw" and match it up with the rudder being straight the handle will be pointing slightly to the right. if you adjust it to center you loose the full left turning ability.

thanks guys! i guess the manual says it should be 20 deg to the right when centered. It felt fine when i had it out at bodega. I was just worried before then

Man, I wish I had read this earlier. I just spent about an hour screwing with my rudder to get the handle lined up and discovered that it was just not going to work. Should have known to look here first. :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
