I am finally starting my jackson big tuna mirage drive project.  I found this mirage drive on Craigslist in my area.  Can anyone tell me a little about it?  I'm guessing it's an early version. What should I look for as far as issues it my have? He wants 375 which according to threads I have searched seems very steep. What would be a fair price?

Having bought two Hobie's within the last year, I was finding the "drives" for around $200 in working condition. They are any earlier version, with the stock fins. Inspect all the cables, lock set screws, and fluidness of the actual "drive". it shouldn't be stiff. But they are serviceable if you can get it at a decent price.

If you prefer the M-drive over a trolling motor go for it, but 300+ is too much
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll sit all day with a rod in his hand and no fish.

$375.00 is high but the older V1 drives come with solid pedal arms which is a plus. However, I think you will need tp spend for turbo fins to adequately power your conversion yak. Keep looking around. Drives do turn up.

I don't want to have to register my kayak and California already gets too much of my money that they waste anyway.

Yeah the tuna is definitely a tank.  Will need to upgrade the fins for sure.

I think $250 is a fair price for the one in the picture.

Thanks for the input guys.  I'm going to make an offer that he probably won't like but we'll see.

That's all that you can do. Figure out the total sum you're willing to spend which includes fin upgrades and a possible new cable or two and make the offer based on that.
