when I was a kid living in Santa Cruz didn't have a lot of money. loved fishing off the rocks but I would lose a lot of lead sinkers. had an automotive repair shop close by and they would give me free used spark plugs. I'd bang the gap closed on a rock and use it for a weight.

I used to do the same thing when I was a kid fishing off the rocks down in Laguna Beach.  No lings down there though but lots of perch and the occasional sheepshead or halibut.
"Pedo Viejo" is what Antonio called me.

I have seen some use small mesh bags and they fill them with sand from the beach.  A lot cheaper than lead.

My dad and I also used sparkplugs for many years at Fort Ross and Kulmer Gulch in the 80's. I've found two washed up on the beach at the fort over the last few years. He has one and I have the other. No telling if they were ours or not because they are so eroded, but my story says they are. I keep mine in a special place on the mantle. Awesome memories.
