Well... this isn't a kayak report, but it could have been considering Stu caught a nice 12lb salmon within only 4 miles from the HMB harbor.

Despite the snotty conditions, we run into a gutsy kayak fisherman name Paul (aka: BlueKayak on Coastide).  We didn't stick around long enough to see him catch one, but he was in the right spot.

Stu and I dropped off our crab traps on the way out.  I ended up with a limit of dungies and rock crab.  Here's was what was left in my cooler after giving away a bunch of crabs.

Awesome catch!  My Dad's friend was tellin me how good the Crabbing  was outside pillar point harbor.  Looks like he was right.  Enjoy the Dinner tonight.  I can't wait to catch some salmon this year!

BTW--  did you catch this morning

Yup, Brian... that was Stu's 12 or 14 foot Klamath.  I bet the guy in the blue kayak was thinking we were nuts to be out in the open ocean in such a small boat... as we were thinking he was nuts for going 4 miles out solo.

Thats a nice meal right there.  You know the ocean is freaky flat when a guy in a 12 foot Klamath runs into a solo yak 4 miles out!

Chuck let the cat out of the bag.  Thought I'd get flamed for being a "traitor", so I was not going to post a report.

The boat is a 14ft Klamath, which is really too small to be out there unless its pancake flat.  The weather report looked good, but was a bit snotty on the way out and flattend out later in the am.

ChuckE

nice to meet you guys - I wound up looking for the boats and gave up about 6-7 miles out and figured out later that I should have been going sw about 2 miles rather than west and north. Gotta get some binocs

I picked up one 9lb female on the way in at 37.37.5/122.355 and then nothing for the entire troll in > fbr behind flasher at 45pulls on a 2 1/2 lb ball - probably should've mooched but time was running short. Looks like things are just still pretty scattered

p.s. you guys should put some serious flotation in that boat

Paul... I'm glad you found our site.  CONGRATS on the 9lb salmon!

I give you major props for sticking it out at HMB and even going further out.  I entered your coordinates (37.37.5/122.35.5) in the GPS calculator at http://www.fishsantacruz.com/gpscalc/gpscalc.aspx  It says you were 9 MILES OUT FROM THE HARBOR :smt119 You deserved a nice limit for that much effort.

I'm not worrying about flotation on Stu's aluminum boat because if I ever have to go out again in those conditions, it'll be in my kayak.  I just feel that much safter in it.

I hope to fish with you sometime.  I'm sure I can learn from you.

I must've posted wrong numbers - the salmon I got was at 37.27.66 and 122.35.55 - more like 6-7 miles out.

Probably see you out there, not sure when I'm going out but might be trying for the stripers on back of the surf - haven't done that for almost 15 years.
