I am new to this sport and have been having lots of fun in the Grass Valley area. The Kayak makes an unbelievable fishing platform!!!! I was thinking I might take my boat on it's first road trip to Baja this winter. A couple months ago I was on another web sight ( HOOK1) which had a link to this great looking camp called Camp Gecko. Now, returning to this web sight (HOOK1) I do not find the link. A web search for camp gecko yields some information that the camp is closed.

If I am not mistaken, some of you guys are somehow affiliated with the Hook1 website as well as this one.

Does anyone have any info. on Camp Gecko???????????   It sure looked like a great spot!!!!!!!!

Last I heard, Doc moved away & the area is only open for long term leases.

My buddies and I camped on the beach a few miles north of Camp Gecko (I think) in May 2005.  We paid some guy about $3 a night to camp out under a palapa.  I'm sure there must still be beach camping options in Bahia de LA somewhere.

Thanks for the info from all.It sounds like I can take my chances and come up with something on the spot.

One thing the website for Camp Gecko had was a chart which showed the best time to catch different species. Anyone remember seeing this chart or know where one like it exist???

The book "The Baja Catch" by Neil Kelly and Gene Kira has all that information.  I borrowed it from my local library and took it with me to Baja for the month.  From the looks of the book, I wasn't the first time that book had made the trip.  It's written for the fishermen with small <16 ft boats with outboards, but it suits the kayak fisherman just fine.  Great info on what to catch, where to catch it, and where to camp.

Two basic questions: When are you going and for how long
If you're set on BOLA in December -January watch out for winds from the north which could turn the bay from a lake into a washing machine in a very short time.
Camp Gecko host Doc ( yea hi is a real Doc) closed the camo and leased his property.
BOLA is going through some major changes tithe the trans-peninsular road from the Pacific to the Sea of cortez.
I used to camp north of town past La Gringa. I understand the Road is closed and guarded by the army .There are plenty of places you can camp, if you're set on BOLA.
The road is paved all the way to BOLA and there is at least one real gas station in town
If you have time and you're set on the same lattitude, it may be worth the 8 hr drive south to San Freancisquito.
If you have even more time, skip BOLA and drive an extra day to Mulege or Loretto. In the winterthe farther south you go the better it gets.
If you go south consider the Pacific side, Mag Bay, and spots north and south of it.
Don't forget your passport you tourist visa fish and yak permit  - good luch and great fun !

Thanks for the book recommendation, I ordered one tonight.

Also, thanks damdan for the hints on San Freancisquito, Mulego, and Loretto. I'll do some research on each.
