I add a small Lil corky float to my braid. Cushions the last inch of reeling line in where the knot rubs the line intake guide. Seems to help.
Cork sounds like it might be a better choice.

Agreed!!! The corky doesn't give much so I've cracked bits and pieces. So it works but cork would be MUCH better!!!!

I just use a bead between my terminal snap and my shuttle hawk.  I also don't crank my downrigger all the way up. I crank it up far enough to reach the ball, then grab the ball and place it in the kayak.  I feel that little bit of stress when the ball is out of the water and hanging in the air isn't very good for the downrigger arm on my laketroller.  When I put the ball back in the water, I grab the line release and ease the ball in.  Have only lost one ball in the past two years and that was due to getting cut off by a rock.

Missed the Lil Corky part. I guess the cork would have to fit tight to the line or it might interfere with the shuttle hawk if it floated up.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan
