Hi fishing lunatics...I am ready and excited for my third season of salmon kayak fishing on the Northern California Coast. From Bolinas to Shelter cove...maybe to Trinidad. Rockfish and free diving also. Nailed my biggest salmon in 35 years last season...32 pounds at Duxbury. What a kayak war that was.

Question: Has anybody shorted their net by 8 or 10 inches to make it easier to handle? And less likely to become a sail on windy days. It seems that standard length cannot be utilized, of all the videos I have seen, and by personal experience.   Let's tear em up! Ron

Personally I wouldn't shorten the handle. If you run a full size dodger on a sinker release or diving plane, your leader is in the 6-8' range. A longer net handle allows you to high stick less. I lay the net down on windy days.

Longer is better.  If your worried about the wind aspect, pull the net down.  I have an extension on my handle with pool noodles stuffed in the handle so it floats.

I've got a few vids where I reach for and bag my salmon...   :smt005

There's no way I'd shorten my net.

Let us know how it works out for ya.   :smt001

I wouldn't want anything shorter than the standard 48" handle or anything smaller than my new big-ass Frabill (34"x30" hoop, 48" deep bag). That extra length lets you shove the butt of the handle under your arm for extra lifting  leverage.
