Hi, I'm new to the board and looking forward to getting into some new spots in a kayak. I'd like to buy a used tandem that also works well as a single. Mostly for spearfishing, but open to any mods for fishing, etc. Maybe Ocean Malibu Two XL or Perception Tribe tandem?

Let me know if you've got something for sale. Thanks!

Jackson Big Tuna would definitely be a good fit if you've got the budget, we can hook you up.  If you're looking for a used Tribe or Malibu II XL and willing to drive to Santa Cruz let me know, we're selling off a lot of our old rentals right now.

Warren,

The BigTuna is pretty awesome...but it is BIG!  :smt005

I sold mine cuz I was mostly diving solo and it was hard for me to move around as easy as I wanted....but it has a ton of awesome features and is stable as heck so definitely worth considering.

The more stripped down tandems like the OK Malibu 2 XL or the Perception Tribe 13.5 are not "ideal" for paddling solo, but they honestly don't paddle that bad! I've paddled 4-6 miles roundtrip on the Perception and actually enjoyed it and having tons of space for gear behind seat and in front was real nice as well.

Dave is a great guy (and a big supporter of NCKA and our events) if you can make it down to SC...if you do let me know and maybe we can meet up to dive!

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

Why a tandem?

I dove off a Malibu 2 for about a year and it sucked as a solo dive rig and even moreso as a tandem dive rig.  There's no storage, they don't paddle well and are generally a pain to move around (loading, putting away in garage, carting to launch, etc) due to the size.
Best tandem is always two singles,

Guys, thanks for the feedback. I'm going to give Dave a call. As to why a tandem- just less to cartop when one of my kids wants to go. Plus I figure if it's a long haul down to the water, simpler just to make one trip each way.
Really appreciate it- hopefully I'll be out there soon with you guys!

+1 I have a double and usually  only  use it as a loner yak.

I have the Ocean Malibu Two XL and it works great, I use it for paddling and fishing both tandem and solo. It's easy to paddle and very stable, highly recommend!
Give a man a fish and he'll eat a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll sit on the water all day with a stick in his hand and no fish.

Thanks guys- I am now the proud owner of a Malibu Two XL. I know I'll be reading some posts and probably pinging some of you for help tricking it out. Ordered some hatches, bungie cord, and got a better seat. Really appreciate the posts and PMs. See you out there- dive safe brothers (and sisters!)
