My parents are coming to California to visit next week.  I thought it would be fun to take them to Tahoe fishing.  Will there be any good fishing at Tahoe this time of year?  If so, any recommendations for a charter boat that could take 3 or 4 people fishing?  Preferably out of Tahoe City or north shore.

Thanks

I have chartered with blue ribbon charters...captained by Dennis St Gene. He has a very nice large boat, and consistently puts people on fish. Despite that, I would not recommend his service. For one he launches out of Cave Rock...I too was staying closer to Tahoe city, so there was the long drive to meet him. He was almost an hour late to the launch, put us on some very small fish, and decided to head for the docks after boating the 4th fish ( 2 for me, 2 for my friend who had the charter as a birthday present) we had only been fishing for an hour or so, despite our request to stay for his two fish limit or catch and release trout for a bit, he took us in to the docs. Not too free withy the information either for those who Like to learn a thing or two While on a guided trip With an expert. You may find a better experience with another guide...
My two cents

My experience with a wintertime charter on Lake Tahoe wasn't that fantastic. I don't recall which charter we used, but we left from the north shore.

It involved heavy saltwater-style conventional gear, and LOTS of wire line out the back. It was very "hands off". He didn't even want us touching a rod until there was a fish hanging, and then it was just a matter of winding a bloated little mackinaw up from the depths while the boat motored on.

It felt more like I was on a commercial boat harvesting fish with some old salty captain letting me reel a few in like he was doing me some kind of favor...

Was that Captain Bob?  I took my wife's cousins out in August a couple years ago and went with Captain Bob out of Tahoe City.  He yelled at us and made us do the driving (actually I didn't mind driving the boat).  He would rig the pole, cast it, get it set in the rod holder, then wait.  When a fish hit, he'd yell at us to get out of the way, he'd hook it, then hand one of us the pole to reel in a ways, then he'd take it back to land the fish.  We did get our limit, but all we got to do was turn a crank for a little bit.  He did everything else.

That one sounds like it might work.  Especially if the fishing is good at the 1:00pm trip.  It's about an hour and a half drive, so if we don't have to get up in the middle of the night that would be nice.

I was scheduled at 1pm, but he called me at 8am because the morning trip caught limit right away, and they were freezing cold so they called it a day. We started at 9:30 hoping to cash in on the crazy morning feeding but were too late. Nothing for anhour. Then we moved to another location and it got good. Limit in 1 hour, he cleaned the fishand we were finished by 2pm.

At first we let the captain do all the setup because it was our first time using downriggers. Its pretty simple. Started doingeverything ourselves, so yea it was hands on for that boat. Hans has been doing charters for over 8 years, so yea he knows what he's doing. Very cool guy too.

I don't remember who the captain was, but that sounds like a similar experience. I could dig up some old pictures, but I'd really rather not. It was a trip with an ex girlfriend. Rather not walk down that Memory Lane.... HA!

Some of these experiences sound truly dreadful.  Ick.  Sounds like hooked up is the way to go!

If Hooked Up is using downriggers, that sounds like a lot more fun (lighter tackle).

The biggest fish we caught was around 5-6 lbs, and it just felt like dead weight hanging from heavy wire line setup.

The fish didn't fight much because they were practically paralyzed with barotrauma... Light tackle would make it a little more "sporty".

PM me if you are interested in Tahoe guides. I have been taken out by a few kokanee guide serves (they also fish for other species) in the Tahoe area.  There are a few who I would highly recommend.

Dennis with eagle point is my favorite Tahoe guide because he jigs. I don't like trolling at Tahoe, takes the fun/effort out of it.
