Props to you El Bandito for getting the necessary safety gear before heading out on your first outting! I would recommend learning how to use the radio at home before going out like whats on each channel, programming some channels to your scan memory, what not to do on the radio and most importantly how to correctly make a distress call..  :smt001
All VERY good points!  Know what channels are most commonly used & for what purpose.  I don't suggest trying out the 'Distress' button though. :smt002

Haha I think there's only a distress button on the vhf radios with gps... At least my radio doesn't have one so I'd have to call 16 and say mayday 3 times and blah blah blah

True

Starting to see more & more VHF's with them now.  Hopefully the trend will continue that direction for safety sake.
