Kayak fisherman don't usually consider a helmet as part of standard equipment. What these guys were doing definatly requires a helmet.

Am I wrong about that? Do you guys all carry helmets in the surf zone?

Nah . .that picture I took was kind of "fish sniffer" wave pic (ie . .I waited for the biggest wave and timed the shot to make it look as gnarly as possible).  Sorry about that . .the real conditions were bad . .but not helmet bad.

Sometimes it gets crazy out there, though.  Last winter I saw 2 kayakers land at Coral St beach in 8+ foot surf.  That was one of the craziest things I've ever witnessed.  It actually inspired me to take up kayaking (although I never want to have to land at that spot in that kind of surf).

Actually, got the helmet for beach landings at Linda Mar.  At high tide you land on sand.  But, at low you land on rocks.  The guys doing the Surf Kayaks there always wear them.
