Looking at putting a digital fish scale on my Xmas list and was looking for some recommendations. I don't see me or the boys catching anything larger than 12-15 lbs. What do you use? Thanks.

If you get one, make sure it's waterproof.  I got a Berkeley fish gripper with a digital scale because I thought I could kill two birds with one stone and have only one instead of two items to lug around.  The battery compartment had a gasket, but I realized later that at best this is water resistent, not waterproof.  Wast dead within one trip.  I decided to forget the high tech approach and got a regular Shimano spring scale. I think it's near impossible to keep your scale dry in the kayak unless you are very careful.  This was even more difficult when the scale was on a 12 inch fish gripper that was held very close to the waterline.

I have the Berkley 65 lb. one and keep it in the truck.  I do not think it likes water.  Cost around $65.  But, I am sure you can find it cheaper.  Also, the 50 lb scale is about $10 less.

I tested quite a few with fixed weights after spring scales didn't cut it at the first Elk tourney.  I have found all of the Rapala and Berkely ones to be hit or miss...mostly miss.  If you want it to be accurate, this funny little one (VH 370-K / VH 370-L Digital Handy Scale) is ON the money.  You can get it here...http://www.virtualmc.com/products_consumer_hang.htm#372  Definitely not waterproof, but mine has been in a lock-n-lock in my seat pocket for 2 years and its still great.

Anyone tried a Boga Grip? It's pricey, $120, but all mechanical and useful for lip landing and weighing and releasing all in one tool. I don't have one but I think it might be real useful on a yak. Tom
