Hi Everyone,
A few weeks ago while crabbing at Bodega I was having trouble with a aggressive large seal who kept getting into my crab ring eating my bait and crabs. I am wanting to upgrade to a seal proof trap that will easily fit onto the kayak that does not weigh a lot.
Please advise what trap would be good for this.
Thank you,
Lori

Take a look at the Promar collapsible crab traps TR102w. Make sure you get the 102w model for crabs. Light weight and easy to carry on kayak.

A sea lion can chew right through the netting of a Promar TR-102W. But it is collapsible, relatively light, inexpensive, and easily stacked on a kayak.

A steel wired Danielson crab trap offers a little more protection against sea lion raids. It too is collapsible, but is a little bulkier to carry on a kayak.

Don't know what U are using for bait but heard seals don't like chicken and turkey .  I use it as a primary bait but sometimes put other stuff in bait jars. But then again, in our neck of the woods we crab so deep that they are not a problem.

I've never had my traps messed with when I bait with chicken. Crabs love it, too.

Just buy the cheapest, crappiest, marked down, almost expired drumsticks you can find.

I don't know about you guys but seals and sea lion loves chicken! It is advised to use squid as bait instead. This works for a fact!

Do you hang your bait in the cage, or do you use jars/mesh bags?  I use the TR-101's and TR-102's and have never had a sea lion rip apart my trap.  Although at Albion, while using a hoop off the dock, I just zip tied a fish carcass in the center of the hoop and the sea lions would steal it right out. of there no problem.  Switched to using a ridged mesh bag to contain the bait, and you could see them swoop down on the ring, then turn away and leave it alone.  Smart Mo'Fo's!

I have been using chicken for bait. It was in the mesh bag attached to the bottom of the ring. I weighed the ring with a weight off my diving belt. I think when it was on the bottom  it laid flat like a dinner plate for the seal. Haha don't think I want to trap seal. Especially the aggressive ones.
I looked thru traps and I liked the Danielson folding trap. I ordered one on line.  Thanks for the trap suggestions. At crabfest I talked to Sonny and I think those were the ones he used.
At Crabfest I was looking at kayak rigging to hold traps on. I like the PVC pipes.  Now looking into how to attach PVC to my Carribean 14. Someone I talked to mentioned a type of tape around the end to fit into the drain holes.  But I can't remember what kind of tape.

Give squid a try next time instead of chicken. You won't get any seals messing with your traps.
