I know it is legal to take Dungeness crab through June 30, but until when can I expect to catch Dungeness crab near-shore via kayaking?  I've heard that commercial boats take most of the crab catch by the end of January.  I'm thinking of crabbing at SF's Baker Beach - do I need to go right away?  Thanks for any advice.

I crab this area about once a week.

After the commercial guys leave, it's much harder to find legal male Dungeness crab. There are plenty of female crab but female Dungeness aren't as big as males so it is harder to get legal keepers.

You can still have a good time crabbing Baker's Beach as long as you understand it's not going to be as good as the first two weeks of November before the commercial guys come in.
