I bet you could use a way lighter ball too, super cool job...still loving it.

Yeah... the trouble is finding one.  Cannon makes a 4# downrigger weight but they want like $25 for it.

The 6# ball was the lightest that they had at OPS for cheap.  You could probably use a regular ball weight as well, but I was concerned about having twisting problems.  The downrigger balls have the little fin on the rear with the eyelet for the release... seems to stay oriented pretty well.

Should be real easy to fabricate your own little fin for ball weights.

Hi Erik! Awesome setup. question -how much did it cost -the entire setup? Is it removeable if not in use?

Approximate pricing from what I could remember...

- Laketroller with post mount = ~$60
- Gimbal Mount = ~$25
- 6# Ball = ~$7 I think

Yes... totally removable in a matter of seconds.  If you don't use the gimbal mount, then you'd just need a scotty bracket located wherever you wish to install the downrigger.  A surface mount bracket is included with the downrigger, but a flush mount bracket would probably be better on a kayak.

Thanks Erik,  very cool.  I've been hoping someone would figure this out as I really hate dropping lead all the time while salmon fishing.  Now if I can only convince my wife that I really need this...

With all those titles you shouldn't even be questioned!!!!!!

I mounted a downrigger on my Manta Ray and was checking out the archives on downriggers. As far as weights go I used a 2.5 pound ball that I cut a slot in it and inserted an aluminium fin, then dip it in Plasti Dip you can get it at home depots for five bucks works very well, the 2.5 pound ball works great to.
