Hi Everyone,
I am just getting into crabbing and plan on heading out into half moon bay. What is a recommended type of weight to keep the trap from drifting too much?  Fishing weights seem a bit pricy for the job. What does everyone use?  Rebar?

Thanks,
Brook

Rebar is cheap.  Small cinder blocks are cheap.  Concrete filled PVC.  The sky is the limit.

Brick! No worries on rusting and I'll drill a couple of holes so that they can be zip tied.

Some bricks even come with holes thru them for rebar.

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

People aren’t supposed to look back. I’m certainly not going to do it anymore.”

they got em...it is also for heat and lightness...I would use some ..or the 1" to 1-1/2 " pvc with cement centers and caps..thats what the charters were using this last 2 trips..

I had a spare 10lb plate I wasn't using - ended up using that as my cage weight. Works great, especially in heavy current - also saves space since it's flat.

I use a 5 Lbs from a weight belt, if you are lucky you may find them in craigslist or garage sales.

It also depends on if you're soaking overnight, weather conditions and the location. If it's just a day soak, the weights might be overkill if the conditions are normal. I leave mine a little further away from the jetty so weights are needed, but wouldn't use them if they were placed closer. Also, I would monitor the weather and adjust the weights or bring in the traps if the conditions are too bad.

I strongly believe in weighing down pots, to minimize any movement of the pot.

As your line/rope gets taunt by the current and/or wind, the swell will have a tendency to lift the pot if the buoy is too buoyant; causing it to walk or making it more difficult for crabs to enter.

Also, it will aid in ensuring that the pot sinks 'bottom down'; which may prevent your pot from being upside down and having the doors remain open.

Weights from double hung windows, already have a hole for zip ties.

I run my with no weights but that may be why I have not been getting many crabs recently. :)
