If only these kinds of fines and probation would be handed out to lying, unscrupulous, politicians I'd feel much better. Why no accountability for some?
No answer required it's a redundant question.

Glad they got caught. Better to be on the right side of the law.

seems like they got off laughing ,just like they were as they smoked ciggy's on wild justice with their faces blurred out....laughing and talking back in smart ass comments.....

what a bunch of bullshit....

go right now-- and try and pull anything off the rocks or take and extra one sometime... would likely get the same or worse...even if it was a single time deal...these guys were a criminal ,well organized group with pre-planning

laughing at the officers and camera crew....good thing they blurred their faces out

Time to re-elect those DAs :smt011, at the very least the court should recover all costs. They should all have got jail time or been deported. They are probably having a party planning their next ab dive.

I agree they all got off easy, but to say they should get deported is to assume that they are not citizens, which may or may not be true, and either way is messed up to assume.

the fines are laughable. where is the solution that has serious consequences for poachers, teaches a lesson of stewardship to sport fishermen, and is able to delineate between a-holes poaching our resources and someone that is doing their part and playing by the rules?

Does a lifetime ban on a hunting or fishing license mean squat. Clearly rules don't mean diddly to them

Ten or fifteen years ago most ab poachers and suspected ab poacher were commercial urchin divers--mostly Caucasian.  They'd pick the abs up here then motor their boats down to southern California and "launder"  the abs through legal harvesting down there.  They'd catch them up here but say they caught them down there--where it was legal.

After a number of boat confiscations, that ended that, and with the end of legal commercial ab fishing in southern Cal.

It's the southeast Asians now, but it'll  be popular with some other group in ten or fifteen years--all those "free" abs just sitting there.

That must have been long ago down here we haven't been able to take abs in about 30 yrs or so. We do have an AB farm here and they mostly go to Japan As I was told.

It was closed in 1997, so yeah, about 17 years ago.  Time flies when you're old.  When I used to dive in Montara, south of SF, we'd run into the commercial guys out there.  They hosed it.  The only saving grace was that they had a larger size limit than us.  Still you could dive all afternoon down there and not get a limit (four then).

In all honesty, us sport guys hosed it too up north.  Back in those days there was no yearly limit.  Man, the pile of ab shells in my back yard was, well, shameful.

That's what you get out of this??

Because I got the opposite message. High up side, nearly no downside - no jail, and if you are willing to poach you obviously don't care about losing license privileges. These guys came out so far ahead of the game I'm considering a career change.
