Coast Guard rescues kayakers off Monterey coastline
Bay City News Service

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people separated from a capsized kayak this morning in waters off Pebble Beach in Monterey County, Coast Guard Petty Officer Tim Barr said today.

A Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched from Pescadero Point after one of the kayakers sent out a call for help on an emergency radio at approximately 8:18 a.m.

The Coast Guard located the pair about one mile off the coast of Pescadero Point around 9:20 a.m. and deployed rescue swimmers to bring the victims on board the helicopter.

The victims have been flown to the Coast Guard air station in San Francisco where they are being evaluated for any signs of hypothermia before being sent to a local hospital for further medical evaluation.

There is a kayak rental outfit at PEbble Beach.  One hopes it was just a tourist.....and not someone who should have "known" better?

Asisde from kayak fishermen, I wonder how many kayakers carry "emergency radios"?

Most of the tourists I've seen don't even know enough to wear the pfd provided them.

I seem to recall a couple of fellows fishing from a double out of Stillwater Cove a few weeks ago.

I hope everyone's OK.

Oops.  Good point.  I remember them.  This would support Howard's observation and experience that nothing flips more often than a double.  Opposite of what you would assume.

Even if this were just tourists, the rental places should do their part in showing a little know-how to these people. It seems that they just put them in a boat with a PFD that may or may not fit correctly and tell them to have fun. Not very responsible.

Was this Frank and crew at Bean Hollow or someone else? I am assuming it was the Bean Hollow people.

Weird, eh?  Pebble Beach is a bit of a walk from Bean Hollow.  It's hard to believe there were two incidents at the same time.  Mercury News got confused?

Seabreeze, there is "a" Pebble Beach, very small, about 1/2 mile north of Bean Hollow (you won't see it coming from the south).  It's just south of Pescadero St Bch.

I am guessing they saw the CG report, saw the words Pebble Beach and Pescadero, and just assumed the wrong combination of locales and county.

Remarkably similar, but Phil and Frank were not flown to SF. So two incidents? Or just misinformation?

I was thinking it was the same one, Scott, as if it truly were Monterey County, I'd guess they would have been flown to Monterey city and not SF.  Not to mention the astronomically small likelihood of it being 2 incidents.

Gosh, yeah, talk about misinformation, though.  For real.
