Does anyone know if you can use bait jigs to catch baby smelt?

Jason,

They use #12 sabikis tipped w/ chicken or shrimp at Ft. Point. Keep in mind there's a 3 hook limit in the bay, outside the bay, i dunno.

I've had good luck with the larger sabikis that you'd use for mackeral.  Usually around the kelp beds.  I cast it out between patties and do a jerky retrieve, that usually gets em going.

Trolling a small kastmaster would probably work great for smelt too.

Josh, I have a feeling Jason is asking about surf smelt in the surf, at least that's what I'm guessing from the "baby smelt" and his recent postings on stripers from the beach.  I know a surf smelt will take a sabiki, I just don't know if it is effective in the surf.

But hey, trolling a kasmaster for jacksmelt, that's something I'll try!
