I had been wanting to check out the Mokelumne River, at the base of the Camanche Dam, for Trout fishing and found that Headwaters Kayak in Lodi offered an "Intro to Currents on the Mokelumne River" Class/Tour that covered that section of the river.

This class was perfect as I wanted to learn about that part of the river for future fishing opportunities and learn how to better control my kayak in current. Since the areas of the rivers I fish here are narrow, the current is stronger that what I am used to on the east coast.

I had a great time and learned a lot about where to fish this section of the river and how to better navigate in current. My Tarpon 120 made it through this section of the river, but it acted more like a barge than kayak when trying to turn into the eddies to get out of the current.

Bill, our instructor for the class was great and one of his best instructions of the day before we started was if you fall out of your kayak "just stand up". The river was so shallow in one part, I did have to get out and walk my kayak.

I highly recommend anyone who is interested in kayaking this part of the river for the first time  take this class.

Here is their web site to learn more: http://www.headwaterskayak.com/

I have attached several pictures showing how beautiful this section of the river is.
