tried fishing the kelp in Capitola today.  Past reports didn't look too promising but I live 5 minutes away so that appealed to me.  Following some local advice, I paddled deep into the kelp, tied off and fished cut squid in shallow water 15-30 feet or so moving if there was no action fairly quickly.  So I moved a lot.  Caught a couple of nice grass rockfish, a few smaller ones, one small olive and a brown rockfish that has to have double jointed jaws bones to get his tiny mouth over the hook!

tried some swimbaits and jigs but too hard in the kelp so gave up on that idea.

Ventured out over sand with dreams of Halibut but found kingfish instead so headed back to the kelp.  Two guys in a skiff caught a keeper halibut, later at the pier was told it was 9 pounds.

not a bad sunday but certainly not as 'fishy' as other areas of the bay.

Great job e2g! Capitola is a pretty hard place to fish just because there isn't so many of them. You had the strategy right and paid off! Bravo!

Nice catch fishing in tight quarters in a kelp forest. I'll bet those would smoke up nicely  :smt007

Nice.  I need to get back out there.  Fun little local place to fish.

I'm trolling for folks go do BH or HMB on Thursday- 10/19. But I'm not allowed out alone within a 10 mile radius of Año Nuevo(I over-shared shark info with the wife). If I don't get any takers, I'd be happy to go for Capitola...

Cool, I could possibly make it Wed/Thurs. Will know more on Monday. Good to see you maybe make some weekday fishin Surf! :smt006
Scott, If you can't get any takers for HMB or BH come on down to Capitola. Although I'm sure Surf wouldn't mind going w/ you to BH.  :smt002

You know it !!

Otherwise, I'll see if I can convince my wife that a short road trip with the baby is called for.

And please use restraint around my beer :)

In the kelp you may want to try a 4 or 5oz. torpedo wt. and squid on the hook.  You get snagged.  It isn't a lot of money.

Try to stay on the outside of the kelp.
