Fort Ross 10/14

Launched about 0900 with my friend Mike.  Caught about 25 rock fish and two underlings mostly small and/or zero retention fish (Canaries & Yelloweyes) kept a few larger Blues.  Mike caught a keeper Ling and an 8lb. Halibut along with his rockfish.  Cloudy, cold, windy and a bit rough in the afternoon, but the launch and recovery there is pretty easy.  I took a fly rod along and caught some small Blues with that, which was fun.  All in all a nice day on the water.

halibut? did someone say halibut? and Fort Ross in the same posting?

Dang! those water temps must be heading up or the pacific halibut are near!

i think its time to get out there myself.

I was always wondering if people were really catching them there.... i guess its true.

Seems there are one or two halibut caught at Fort Ross every year... about five years ago, my buddy caught about a 25 pounder out of there while rockfishing.

This was only my second time there, so I am definitely not an expert on the area.  A park employee came down to the beach to see our fish and seemed surprised to see the Halibut.  The cove there has a sandy bottom so it shouldn't be too surprising for some Halibut to be in there.

Nice report.  I will be up in that area this weekend and might try Ft. Ross since I have fished at Salt Point Many times.  What was the halibut caught on?

It was caught on a soft plastic swim bait while fishing for rock fish.
