I've seen this done all by hand...a knife through the head...if you're concerned about a quick kill...and then just split the carapace from the leg sections by hand and break the leg sections apart. Clean it up and steam, boil or saute with or without the green ' butter '. Personally I like pure white sweet dungie with fresh sourdough bread, a nice salad and a good cold white wine. One of the blessings of winter here in Nor-Cal. Tom

My machete does not come with crab cleaning instructions.

Slit carapace down through top?  Use to split through bottom first?
